Jack in the Box

Q1) Go to a restaurant in Olympia and have a delicious meal there. Be adventurous. Try something special that you’ve never had before.

Q2) Tell us what your meal is like. What did you eat? What was the quality of food like? What is the size? What is the cost? Give us the specific who, what, when, why and where’s of what you are eating.

Q3) Take pictures of your food.

Q4) Tell us what your meal represents for you. What is one issue related to food that you’d like to explore and discuss? What is the larger picture underlying your outing to this restaurant? Is it the ethical question of organic, local food economies, the marketing of food, the treatment of animals, or the challenge that obesity poses in the United States? Choose one issue to address and explicate.

A1) Since I don't live in Olympia, I chose to go to Jack in the Box in Puyallup. I don't eat fast food often and when I do it's usually McDonalds so it was kind of new for me.

A2) My meal was very good and filling. I had a number 6 on the Jack in the Box menu which happened to be Bacon Ultimate Cheeseburger with curly fries and a Coke. I had the choice to choose from small, medium, or large and i chose a medium sized meal. The meal I chose cost about $7 dollars after tax. After I got my food i drove back to my house (because I got it in the drive thru) where my Mom was. I sat down at the kitchen table and ate my meal.

A4) To me, the meal represents how unhealthy American's live in this day and age. One issue that this related to food that I would like to discuss is obesity in America. The ethical question that I will be discussing is the challenge that obesity poses in the United States.

Sushi Boat

I decided to try something different, so I went to the Sushi Boat here in Lacey on Martin Way. While it would’ve made sense to order sushi, I’m not that adventurous. Instead I ordered shrimp tempura, green tea ice cream, and water. I didn’t actually order the green tea ice cream, but they offered me to try it so that was the most adventure I got for the day. The meal came up to be $7.88 which is reasonably priced.

This wasn’t my first time trying shrimp tempura, but I felt like I was eating more of the coating than the shrimp. Considering it was a prawn, and prawns are quite large I was surprised I was unable to find it. Which brings me to the size of the dish; it was a decent sized meal and it filled me up. Moving onto to the green tea ice cream, I was excited to try this and even more so when they gave me two scoops for the price of one. However, I must say this is a dessert I never want to eat again. It mixed two of my favorite things, tea and ice cream, but the taste was far from the two. It is one of those desserts you either like or don’t like and is obvious from the first bite.

This restaurant represents trying something new, Japanese food, and my experience with it. The questions that it raises are whether or not the food is organic and where the seafood comes from, and how different cultural restaurants change their style of cooking dishes to meet the palette of Americans.

Dinner at PHO

Last Friday i went to a restaurant near my house called PHO. I had never been there before but has always heard good things about the food. My friend suggested that i ordered the PHO, which was a noodle soup dish with beef in it. The dish was very good, it was cook perfectly and tasted great. I ordered the regular size which is the smallest and i could not finish it. There was a lot of it. I liked how they gave me so much food for only $5.00. I think that my meal was healthy and priced affordable. I could see a person going to PHO after work when they don't want to cook and being able to receive a large healthy meal for a really good price. This particular restaurant was located right down the street from an Asian market, which my friend who knows the people that work at pho well, said that is where they get their ingredients daily. You can taste how organic the food is with every bite.

Mexican

I went with a friend to a Mexican Restaurant, unfortunately I can't quite remember the name but I believe it was Cancun Plaza. For dinner I ordered a vegetarian meal, I am not quite a meat person so I decided to try something different than from my usual flour tortilla, beans, and rice. I got a vegetarian fajita meal. It was absolutely wonderful, it came with sauteed onions, green and red peppers, mushrooms in a taco seasoning ( a little spicy). On the side I got a farely good size bowl of black beans, and a side of rice that had carrots and peas in it, and that rice contained a little seasoning in it as well. My meal was so exquisite and really hit the spot. Unfortunately the plate was HUGE! My friend and I could of shared it plus another person. I didn't dare try and eat it all I doubt I would of been able to get very far. I snuck a look at the price of my plate and it cost $12.95 for it. At first I felt horrible because I felt like that was way to much money for some sauteed vegetable but after seeing how much I got on my plate it made complete since on why it was so much. The nice part also being that I could box it up and take it home for dinner or lunch the next day. Along with my meal I had water and than when time came for dessert I really had to force myself to say no. Although they had this custard that looked absolutely amazing for $8. The price for that really got to me and by the end of the night I was so full from eating a quarter amount of my meal I didn't dare say yes to dessert.

Going out To eat

Panera Bread

I went to Panera Bread and had half of a turkey sandwich and a small caesar salad and an apple. The quality of the food was very good. The bowl that the salad came in was too big for the serving size so it looked like there wasn't very much. The sandwich wasn't anything special but they use their own bread which was fresh and very delicious. I got an apple as a side instead of chips and the apple was fresh and delicious. My meal came out to 9.27 which I thought was a little pricey for something so simple, but doesn't stop me from going back, I'll just go once in a while now. After you order your meal they give you a beeper which goes off when your meal is ready which I really liked. It let you sit down get your drink and was a good system. They were quick to make my order and get it out to me and I really enjoyed going there. They have a lot of different breads and pastry's which I want to go back to try.

I would like to explore more on what Michelle Obama is trying to accomplish with her new plan and how she is going to do so. I'd also like to learn more about Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution, a show on ABC and see the kind of impact it has on school food and if it will stick around.

Taste of Korea

Yesterday I went to one of my favorite places, Seoul restaurant, to eat dinner. It is located on Martin Way. I ordered Bi-Bim-Bop, which is the most popular Korean dish. Being so hungry, I was counting the seconds till the food was ready. When the waitress brought Bi-Bim-Bop, I couldn't wait to start to eat. The dish was a big hot bowl with warm rice and beef, vegetables and fried egg on the top. The variety of vegetables (soybean, zucchini, spinach, carrot and cucumbers) created a specific taste which reminded me of the time when I was in South Korea. The meal cost me $10 included tax. I think this is not bad for good dinner. I left the restaurant filled with great emotions of a hearty dinner.

The dish which I had in Seoul restaurant, Bi-Bim-Bop, represents to me fresh and healthy food. Today, people prefer to eat fast food, but if they go to the restaurant and order a hamburger or sandwich with French fries it will cost around $8-10. Therefore, it is better to pay couple dollars more for a healthy dinner. Also, Bi-Bim-Bop expresses to me Korean traditional food. The way it is cooked and ingredients used have been presented for hundreds years, and now the country should be proud of their traditions that people follow.

Budd Bay Cafe

On Sunday my husband and I went to Budd Bay Cafe in Olympia for lunch. They were easy to find and in downtown Olympia on the water. We arrived at 2:30 and were seated immediately. The restaurant was clean with a beautiful view of the water. Our waitress was named Kim and incredibly friendly.

She suggested the strawberry lemonade and I agreed that sounded wonderful. My husband ordered water. We ordered the steamed clams for an appetizer and while we were waiting she brought us warm homemade sourdough rolls.

When the clams came out they were steamed in a garlic white wine chardonnay sauce with carrots and celery. Then, surprisingly, they also had almonds sprinkled them and they gave a very satisfying texture. The clams were also well cooked and not chewy or undercooked. The portion size was also quite large, especially for a lunch appetizer.

I ordered seafood Alfredo for my main course and it came with clams, shrimp, and scallops. I was thrilled to find there was a lot of seafood in the pasta and they did not skimp because it was lunch time. My husband ordered blackened salmon with roasted asparagus and bell peppers and a side of Yukon gold mashed potatoes. He said his salmon was moist and delicious. (after letting me taste it I agreed!)

The price was really acceptable also.

Strawberry Lemonade = $2.95

Steamed Clams= $13.00

Blackened Salmon= $13.00

Seafood Alfredo= $13.00

Total= $ 45.53 (before tip)

When reading the menu I was surprised to read that all of their burgers as 1/2 pound of all natural beef with no antibiotics, steroids, growth hormones, or bi-products. Their oysters are local when they are in season. The salmon is all farm-raised in British Columbia.

Good eating at a nice cost

It was a nice warm, and sunny day this past Sunday, so I went with my sister to lunch. She took me to this restaurant in Tacoma, WA close to downtown Tacoma. It was this Teriyaki place, and you had tht option to eat indoors or outside under covered seating. We ate outside, so we could enjoy the weather while we were eating. I had Teriyaki Chicken, with spicy chiken, a side of salad, and white rice with a glass of strawberry lemonade. the size of the meal was quite large, there was a nice amount of food to choose from. There was enough meat, and rice so that one did not out do the other one. The quality of the food was great. The meat was cooked to how I would like it, and the salad was nice and fresh. The lemonade was chilled, and the strawberries in the lemonade were just ripe enough. The cost of this meal was $8.99.

My meal for me represents a nice fulfilling meal, that could also be looked at as a good meal for a cheap price. One issue that I would like to explore related and discuss related to food is the obesity rates in our country. The larger picture of this outing to this restaurant is that you do not always have to spend a lot of money to have a nice full meal, you just need to look around and you will find something that you like, at a price that is right for you. The ethical question would be the challenge that obesity poses in the United States. Just because you find food at a cheap price does not mean you are always getting the best value for your body in the long run, and vice versa.

"Mrs Kim Bibimbap"

This weekend, I decided to take a little adventure on my meal for dinner. I went to Tofu hut here in Lacey and decided to eat a popular healthy Korean dish called "Mrs Kim Bibimbap". It's a bowl of rice topped with warm soft tofu, fresh seasonal vegetables, sesame oil, and red pepper paste but without the egg. The quality of the food is really rich, it had great vegetables and I loved the tofu. They only had one size of the meal and I would guess it as medium to large from what I normally eat. It cost $9 dollars without tax. I barely try new things from restaurant and I think this adventure I did last Saturday was worth it all because I loved the food and the people that works there are very friendly.

My meal represents the variety of food we eat every day. One issue that is related to my food is eating healthy and choosing healthy. The outing to this restaurant underlies the ethical question of dietary foods. Nowadays, we barely get a chance to eat veggie foods because they are more expensive than the regular day to day fastfood meals. However they represent a healthier choice on food for anyone.

Applebee's Chicken Wings

As I was getting ready to leave for my restaurant adventure, I noticed my gas tank was nearly empty so I decided to stay close to campus and have a meal in Lacey instead of the nearby Olympia. My friends in Tacoma always talk about this deal that Applebee's has where after 9 pm, all appetizers are half price! I had never been to Apple bee's, and my wallet was looking close to empty so... Applebee's it was!

I was browsing the appetizer menu, looking for something that might fill me up even though it was an appetizer. I'm a really big fan of hot wings, so I decided to give this restaurant's wings a try. I'm going to be completely honest and say these wings were AWESOME! They were larger than most chicken wings, nicely dipped in a "not too spicy" sauce, incredibly tender, and came with 4 crisp slices of celery to accent the spicy flavor. The wings also came with a creamy ranch dipping sauce that made each bite of chicken even more delicious than they already were! There were 12 of them, which is very surprising because most other restaurants charge a customer an average of 10 dollars for maybe 8 wings! After I gulped down my glass of water, the bill came and my meal was only $7.24!! I was full, had a satisfying meal, and spent less than ten dollars. I couldn't have chosen a better restaurant to venture out to for this project.

A food related issue I would like to look into is the over pricing of food. Like I said, most restaurants will charge you up to 10 dollars for 8 tiny pieces of chicken and after you buy a soda, your meal may amount to 15 dollars. Being a broke college student, I can't spend money on food like that so I pay close attention to prices at restaurants. I would like to research the actual pricing of food products, the markup percentage, the actual quality of the food (is it WORTH the price?), and the profit being made for the restaurant.

Happy Teriyaki

Unfortunately, my lack of an automobile has caused me to dine a little closer to Saint Martin's. I went to a restaurant called Happy Teriyaki, right across the street from saint martin's.
The food was great! I absolutely loved it! I had a teriyaki bowl and a frozen yogurt with strawberries and sprinkles. The teriyaki bowl was large, in fact, I had to get it to go because it was too much for me to eat. The quality of food was great, especially the frozen yogurt! It was delicious! The cost was cheap, it was about ten dollars for the whole meal.

The issue related to food I would like to explore would be fair trade. The vision of fair trade is as follows : "Our vision is of a world in which justice and sustainable development are at the heart of trade structures and practices so that everyone, through their work, can maintain a decent and dignified livelihood and develop their full potential." The ethical question I am choosing to focus on is the food economy and how it can be improved so that workers are paid well for their work.

Farrelli's Pizza

I ordered takeout from Farrelli's Wood Fire Pizza, 4870 Yelm Highway Southeast, Lacey, WA. It's located in the Safeway shopping center at Yelm Hwy and College Street.

I ordered a 12 inch Fawaiian Pizza, with an "F" not an "H". The cost was $14.49 before tax and tip. Farrelli's describes it as their "'classic pizza' loaded with Canadian Bacon, mozzarella / Provolone and sweet pineapple is a sure "Apple Fired" hit." The crust was hand tossed with the taste and consistency of Naan Bread from the Middle East. It was very good. The marinara sauce was tangy and delicious. The Canadian Bacon had cooled some, but that is likely just due to the length of the drive home. The pineapple was plentiful and sweet.

I polished off this pizza in about 15-20 minutes once I arrived home. This would be a good pizza for two for a lunch, or a large meal for one. If you are a light eater, then I do not recommend trying to eat this pizza in one sitting by yourself.

Overall, I would have to rate this pizza as a B+ on the takeout scale. The dining-in scale would give this pizza an A.

Pizza represents a reward to me. It's not often that I eat pizza anymore, so when I do, I order good pizza, and I enjoy it. This restaurant is one of five in the Farrelli's chain. In my opinion, Farrelli's does a better job of making pizza than any of the nationwide chains, whether it's dine-in, takeout or delivery. I would rather support local business in these tough economic times, and when the local guy has better food than the national guys, we both win.

Healthy eating can be tasty

I am always keen to try something new. Especially when it comes to food. In an effort to keep finding new and interesting tastes, I decided to have a meal at Angel Thai in downtown Olympia.

We started dinner with fresh spring rolls. These were very good, and by my estimation pretty healthy as well since we got them fresh and not fried. They came with a peanut and a sweet sauce, of which I preferred the sweet. I think this was mainly because the peanut sauce was warmed, and the spring rolls chilled.

My main course was Pad Thai. Rice noodles with beef and vegetables, cooked in a wok with a spicy sauce. Being a fan of spicy foods, I chose a "two star" level of spiciness (the scale ranged from no starts up to three stars) and this made the food just on the upper end of my tolerance. Maybe next time I go with one star, but I suspect my preference would be 1 1/2. Maybe I can ask for that next time.

This was an excellent opportunity for me to eat out, share a dinner with a friend, and do so with delicious and healthy food. All to often I find myself eating fast food, and even when I go to a restaurant, 'western' meals are all to often not as healthy as I may like. I suspect I will be returning to Angel Thai again soon.

A different culture in your plate

Well fellows I tried sushi in the Main Chinese Buffet that it’s close to the university. I go there with my friend Jess that love sushi and know a lot about that food. The quality of the food was really good. The place where I went is a buffet and the cost it’s really good for all the food that you can aford and the great food quality. The cost in the lunch times its $7 per plate plus tax and you have a lot of Chinese food including sushi and seafood. I think that the meal represents for me a new culture and the mixed of races in the whole word. One issue that I really want to look about the sushi food it’s how healthy is and how your health can change (for good or for bad) eating this type of food. I was really pleased with the services and the quality of food, I didn’t like a lot the sushi food anyway but was a really good experiences. Probably if I’m going to address a topic it’s going to be the obesity in United States because too many people said that this is a really healthy food so probably if more people try it and like it we can have more healthy people with a better weight in USA.

Happy Teriyaki

I went to happy teriyaki. My meal was teriyaki chicken. The quality of the food was good, and the size of the food was large. I could not even able to finish my food because of the portion of the food size. The server was very polite and did not rush us. The interior was clean and quite. The cost of my food was $7.50 plus tax. The issue I would like to explore is the size of food that they serve us.

Red Robin

The meal was delicous. I had a bacon burger with cheese and fries. The Quality was good and they brought it out relatively quick with endless amounts of strawberry lemonade that was amazing! the cost was 14.95 for my food and strawberry lemonade. I went to Red Robin because it was the only place open after my late baseball game.

What I look for in a meal is the home made quality with the fast food speed. I think Red Robin tries to do this with there overly friendly service and there catchy sayings on all of there flare. Overall Red Robin was a great place place to eat, with fast polite service and tasty food.

Hidalgo Mexican Restaurant

2) The plate of food that i had was a Mexican dish. I sometimes go to Mexican restaurants, however I had never tried this specific dish. I had Pollo a la Mexicana at Hidalgo Mexican Restaurant in Tacoma. The food quality at this restaurant was pretty good, even though it seemed to have a little too much of grease. This dish was fairly big and towards the end it was kind of hard for me to finish it, but I managed to do so. The cost me $10.95 in my opinion i believe that it was an alright plate for the size of the meal.

3) What my meal represents to me an easy way of getting food and still getting in some way the taste of home made food in my mouth. An issue that can be addresses relating to my food is the quantity and the healthiness of the meal. Because the business of restaurants has grown so much in the US many Americans are resourcing to eating out with the risk of consuming a not so healthy meal.

Applebee's food

I went to Applebees during the weekend and I ordered the Fiesta Lime Chicken because i have never tried this one before. I noticed that the meal was way to big for only one person. Also, we ordered a special of 2 meals, and an appetizer for only $20. Between me and Michael, we ate the appetizer, and then they brought us our two meals. So all this food was big for two people, plus the price is unbeatable! My dish came with rice, tortilla and cheese on top of the chicken. The size of the chicken was enormous, and the plate was big to fit all that food. This meal represents a traditional American restaurant. When you go to eat to restaurants like applebees, you get so full that you do not eat anything else for the rest of the day. I think that the US has a big problem of their food size which is very convenient to fit your budget. They give you an enormous amount of food for a very low prize. This leads to obesity and when people go to these restaurants and eat all this quantity, later people need to eat more and more. Plus, it is ridiculous that they ask you if you still want dessert! I have never been able to eat dessert at any of these restaurants! The food is always very big.

Ricardo's

On Saturday night I took my friend Stephanie to Ricardo's, about a block away from Saint Martin's. It was a pretty nice place, very small but wasn’t too small. There was a bottle of wine on our table from 1808, probably extremely expensive. I got one of the cheapest things on the menu and so did my date, about fifteen dollars each. I got the Alfredo Russo, which was a plate of noodles with alfredo sauce, sliced mushrooms, and pieces of sausage. The food was very good, I couldn’t finish the whole plate though, partly because I filled up on the free bread before my actual meal came. Overall, including the five dollar tip, I spent forty bucks on the meal, and that was without getting anything to drink, besides water which is free.

One issue that this meal brings up is the price. It probably cost the restaurant a couple dollars to make our meal, but they charge so much for it. I could have gone to the store, bought all the ingredients, and made the same meal for about ten dollars. The portions of the meals were also a little large, I felt like I was wasting my money because I couldn’t finish all of it. I would have felt better about it if it was a smaller portion and I finished the whole thing, that way it wasn’t wasted. I also like how it was a smaller restaurant. I paid them a good amount for good quality food that isn't made by a large corporation, it’s a small restaurant, and that’s part of what adds to the experience.

Sorry, the picture of the food is kind of dark and hard to see, it was dark in the restaurant for mood lighting, which made it difficult to get a good picture.

Chili Thai Restaurant

This past weekend I decided to go out to dinner at the Chili Thai Restaurant in Lacey, Washington. The restaurant is a small establishment just off of Lacey Blvd. SE, close to Saint Martin's University. As the name of the restaurant probably already informs you the chef's at Chili Thai cook only authentic thai food specialties.

I have only been to Chili Thai one other time before this outing and so I decided instead of getting the chicken pad thai noodles (which I experienced during my first dining experience) I would try something different; such as the original pork fried rice. The service was exceptional and our food was served in a very timely manner. I felt as though the rice serving was the perfect size. However if one were to consult the food pyramid, I'm sure that the serving size would have been to big to meet the dietary standards; although it filled me up, without making me feel sick to my stomach, as if I had eaten enough to satisfy me for 2 weeks, like a lot of other restaurants do! My companion who I was dining with that night ordered the chicken pad thai noodles, and I would have to say that this serving size was much bigger than my serving of rice. We ended up having to take almost half of the noodles home!

I was pleased with the healthness of my rice dish. I have dined at many other thai and chinese restaurants and have always found the fried rice to be slightly over salted. However at Chili Thai I could taste some salt but not so much that I kept having to request a refill of my water glass. Also there were cucumbers, onions, tomatoes, and broccoli all included in my fried rice dish. All of which were very tastey and included in their raw state.

Overall my dining experience at Chili Thai was a very enjoyable one. The service was fast and the waiters were all kind and polite. I would definitely recommend this establishment to anyone who is looking for a healthy yet tastey thai cuisine to dine at!

restaurant

1) Go to a restaurant in Olympia and have a delicious meal there. Be adventurous. Try something special that you’ve never had before.

I go to Tofu Hut, and I eat famous katsudon.

2) Tell us what your meal is like. What did you eat? What was the quality of food like? What is the size? What is the cost? Give us the specific who, what, when, why and where’s of what you are eating.

I go with my friend, and the price is about $8. The content is egg, tofu, onion, and mushroom on rice.
it is delicious and health.

3) Tell us what your meal represents for you.

In Japan, Katsu is fried pork, and don is rice ball. But the Katsudon does not have Katsu. I am surprised that how Japanese food in America is different to the Japanese food in Japan. For example the chicken teriyaki is not famous in Japan. We do not eat Chicken Teriyaki like that.
the Japanese food in America is not real Japanese food. I think that the Japanese food in America is Americanized.

Bread

Sometimes you want to sit to a good meal of steaks, crab cakes and just plain bread. Last week at Budd Bay café, my husband and I shared one of those moments.
I had the following:
Baseball cut petite top sirloin 6 oz
asparagus
Caesar salad
Baked potato with sour cream and chives and bacon
Bread rolls

My husband had:

3 Dungeness crab cakes with roasted bell pepper sauce
Rice pilaf
Asparagus
Clam chowder
Bread rolls

Needless to say we enjoyed ourselves and were filled with the quiet glazed over calm that settles when one’s belly is happily full.

Which, when contemplating scrumptious food or just any topic related to food in general, brings me to another matter— this question actually: What makes a yummy meal a nutritious meal and how can we eat for our health? Just how much food should one ingest for a meal, or better yet, for an entire day? And what types of foods constitute healthy eating choices? MyPyramid.gov recommends that adults, depending on their activity level intake anywhere from 1,600-2,200 calories. The food guide pyramid also recommends daily servings from the vegetable, fruit, milk and cheese, meat and fish and bean, and bread and pasta food groups. What is striking about these recommendations is the diversity and range of food stuffs we see here. Perhaps the old adage “a little bit of everything” is the best advice. Bread anyone?

Food For Thought

1. I went to Applebees
2. I had an oriental chicken salad. The quality was very good. The size was very beneficial. The cost was around $8.50-9.50. The salad had a sweet dressing that was quite good. There were cut up almonds on top of it. I went there with my roommate. We went there on monday night around 10:30 pm. I had the chicken grilled not breaded to be a little more healthy.

3. I didn't get a chance to take a picture.

4. The meal I choose represented me because i wanted to get something that was good but also healthy. I would like to explore obiesity and the issues our society has with it. I think it's a very serious issue that our society needs to address immediately. I don't think the fault falls on society itself; I believe its the owners of the fast food chains. Business is business so whatever sells is what is going to make the most money. As long as people keep on buying the supersize value meal at McD's, BK, or DQ, obiesity is going to continue to plague our society. I think it's harder to eat healthy. The reason why is that it's less expensive to eat out everynight. Fresh fruits and vegtables can be spendy, compared to Taco Bell's 89 cent burritos.

Spicy Tuna Sushi

This past weekend, I went to Koibito's restaurant on Pacific Avenue. I ordered a spicy tuna roll. It was delicious. It included seaweed, rice, tuna mixed with spicy sauce. The taste of this spicy tuna roll has been breathtaking. I also eat my spicy tuna roll with some soy sauce for an extra bit of flavor. However, this roll is slightly hot so water was a necessity with this meal.

The service at Koibito's was excellent. The waiters were very friendly and made the costumers feel very comfortable. They also guaranteed good service by refilling waters whenever needed and checking on the costumers often to make sure their costumers were comfortable. The chefs cooked the food in the open area allowing the costumers to watch their food being made and it looked fascinating from the beginning.

The cost of this spicy tuna roll was around $10. It was expensive because of the rareness of the fish. It rose the issue of the extinction of certain animals because they are being killed to be used as our food. Using animals as food is lowering the amount of animals that are living.

Ranch House

I went out to lunch with an old friend from high school the other day. We went to a small restaurant almost in the middle of no where that serves mostly BBQ and good ol' fattening American food. I decided on a bacon burger with a pile of house fries. My burger was topped with lettuce, cheese, and BBQ sauce. My meal was quite tasty! The cost of my meal was about $11.85. A little on the pricy side for a burger but I believe that we were paying for the great service that was practiced. Our waitress was friendly and joked with us the whole time. Also, the owner came out and walked around the restaurant to ask everyone how their food was.

I believe this is a great example though of how fattening a meal can be. I think that there are many issues that arise with the issue of food, especially fast food in the US. People are worried about being over weight and obese in todays society. Today many fast food restaurants are being asked to change their menu to make it more health friendly. But what about choice? A person chooses whether or not they go out to eat. They could ask for smaller portions or make sure to work off the calories they burn. There is a line that is not understood in this situation...To be fat, or not to be fat? Most of the time the question is for oneself, but, if there was a way to make restaurants healthier, would it really help?

Red Robin

On April 19th, 2010 (my birthday), I went to Red Robin. This is typically a very busy restaurant since it is on the west side of Olympia, right next to the mall. When I went there, there was a short line but things were moving pretty quick. I wasn't even waiting for 5 minutes until I was seated. When I looked around, I saw a bunch of people and the employees singing happy birthday to groups. I didn't want them to sing to me so I didn't let anyone know it was my birthday.
Once I was seated, the waitress came right up and asked us if we wanted any drinks or appetizers. I was with my girlfriend so I decided we could share some mozzarella sticks. As busy as it was I was expecting it to be a while until I would get my drinks and appetizer. The mozzarella sticks and drinks were on my table in about 4 minutes. I ordered a prime rib dip for my meal and my girlfriend ordered the gourmet burger. Our meals came out in pretty good time but it wasn't until I started eating that I finally had a problem. The table we sat at was a little two person booth. I have fairly broad shoulders so I found it difficult to manage eating in a tight spot. My meal was prime rib with onions on a French bread roll with a side of garlic fries and coleslaw. I finished my prime rib dip very quickly and then got to the garlic fires. It was all delicious but I had become full because of the mozzarella sticks before. My girlfriend couldn't finish her burger either. Although my meal tasted very good, I found the fries to be greasy. I typically don't eat greasy food so it was hard on my stomach.
When the waitress brought out the bill, I noticed that book the bill was kept in was also a dessert menu. My first thought was, good marketing idea. Then, this made me realize how our American culture is used to large amounts of food and very unhealthy food. It is nice to eat out every once in a while but I couldn't eat like this every day. When I got back to my dorm I had to take a nap because I was so full. Another downfall of this restaurant is that it is a little bit on the pricey side. For just my girlfriend and I the bill came to $32.63 and I left a tip on top of that. It isn't that much money but just for two people it seems kind of expensive. All in all, my outing made me realize that our culture spends a lot of money on large meals that are nothing more than grease.

Mariachi's

Instead of going to Olympia I went to Mariachi's Mexican Restaurant in Yelm. I went with my mom on Saturday. I decided to branch off and order something I have never ordered before so I choose a seafood enchilada. The price was $14.95 and the portion size was HUGE! However, there was too much food to finish in one sitting. The quality of the food was very tasty and the service was very good as well, we ordered and they brought our food out to us about 5-10 minutes later. Questions which could be explored concerning this restaurant are; how fresh the fish is since Yelm is not very close to an ocean, as well as is the vegetables used were organic or not. Another question would be to evaluate how so many fast food restaurants in Yelm affect the small family owned restaurants. Mariachis didn’t have a whole lot of people inside, but when I drive through Yelm the fast food restaurants are always packed. It would be interesting to evaluate the “why” factor to this question.

food

1) Go to a restaurant in Olympia and have a delicious meal there. Be adventurous. Try something special that you’ve never had before.
Yea, not going to happen, not trying anything new...
2) Tell us what your meal is like. What did you eat? What was the quality of food like? What is the size? What is the cost? Give us the specific who, what, when, why and where’s of what you are eating.
I ate sushi at Great Wall in Tacoma , they were delicious , i was full after eating 75% of my portion , with drink and tip i think i left 15 $ . Quality was good, pretty much what i expected from asian restarant.
3) Take pictures of your food.
( next time)
4) Tell us what your meal represents for you.
Food is food, going to the restaurants represents a time to meet up with your friends and just BS about stuff .
I can care less about treatment of animals I don’t ask them did they got killed in humane way or not , cose i dont think the animals cares at the time its on my plate. As far as obesity, you as a customer have a choose what you eat , how you exercise and do u chose to eat healthy or not

Praise the Lard

I went to Ramblin Jack’s in downtown Olympia. I had a “Jack’s Sampler” including tri-tips, pork shoulder, and ribs. The taste was wonderful. The rub that was placed on the meet was distinct and mouth watering. My only problem with the meal was the portions were huge. You not only got three different meets, you also got two sides. Needless to say the plate was very full, even at the end of our meal. The cost was reasonable for the quality of food, relatively the same price as going to a well known, chain, sit down, steak restaurant. We spent $50 on two entrees, two drinks, tax and a tip. The interior was clean and bright. There were not that many people sitting down for dinner, but there was a large baby shower going on in the back room. The noise from the party could not be heard from our table at all. When we entered the restaurant we were seated immediately. It 25 minutes for us to get our meal, also we were given a cheese bread as a appetizer before our meal arrived. Overall I had a great experience at Ramblin Jack’s and would recommend it to any of my friends and family.

Pho

I went to a pho restaurant on pacific today. I orderd a beef combination pho. It only took about 5 minutes from ordering till the food was ready. It contains beef broth, rice noodles, thin-sliced onion, green onion, beef steak, beef meat balls, soft tendons and tripes. There are some ingredients that are not usual for American food, such as tendons and tripes. Besides the big bowl of soup noodle, the meal also comes with herb, bean sprouts, lime, hot pepper. The meal costs $7.53 including tax. The food was light-seasoned. Seafood sauce and hot sauce are on the table, so customers can change the taste of soup the way they like. I really liked the soup, I wish I could finish all the soup, but it was a lot of soup to drink.

This meal represents a new image of fast food. Fast food usually represents oily, high calories. Pho is light-seasoned, seems very healthy to me.

Food for thought

Today I went to Panda Express on Martin Way in the shopping area of Lows and Safeway. I ordered chow main, orange chicken and sweet and fiery chicken with a raspberry iced tea. The food was fresh off the stove; yet, it was a tad bit greasy. The meal cost a total of $7.70. The serving size was more than I could stomach in one sitting. By the time I was full nearly half the meat was still on my plate and most of the chow main was gone. I went to this restaurant alone for lunch on Thursday afternoon.

This meal represents nothing more than a quick and easy way to get something reasonably healthy. Even though the food was greasy and the chicken was breaded, I was able to get some veggies in my meal by ordering chow main. I think the question I would like to explore more is the marketing of food and if the way something is displayed causes us to desire it more.
